Golf Swing Is Too Flat

Turn your trunk with your arms and hands as a transition between the backswing and the downswing. Keep the rotation through the impact and let your arm and shoulder free up completely at impact. Plant your trail foot as flat as possible during the downswing and through the impact. This allows you to keep your hips from crossing the shot and shooting the ball. Keep your arms and body turning left through tracking rather than swinging your arms more vertically.

When you hold the Special-K position during your backswing, your elbows stay at the same level as the top of your swing. This, in turn, prevents the twist of the club face. Staying in your K makes your backswing more rounded and, instead of lifting the clubhead suddenly and tearing it off its swing bow, the club tree moves on the right path of swing with a gradual ascent of the group. Another good learning method is to train to swing with a stick placed in the ground and tilted to match the inclination of the upper leg.

The back should be kept reasonably straight, and you should lean to the waist, with a slight flexion of the knees. In terms of bearing width, a good rule of thumb is the width of the shoulders for short and medium irons, and progressively wider with long irons, hybrids, woods and the driver. The ball should be positioned out of your left heel for most shots, but with the driver, it should be slightly forward in your position.

Imagine a set of railroad tracks leading to the hole. "You want the face of the club to be on the outside track, and your feet, your hips and your shoulders on the inside track," says Hamilton. If you hit with a 5-iron, keep the ball lightly in front of the center towards your left foot if you are right-handed. The smaller the club number, the more you have to move the ball forward on the track - with your pilot, the ball should be almost to your left.
